The Ancient Year
History
Sixth graders take an exciting journey through the beginnings of Western civilization, from Creation to the fall of Rome. They explore early societies, learn about their achievements, and make connections across different civilizations and to today. Topics include Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, and World Geography.
Math
Students build on what they’ve learned in earlier grades, focusing on ratios, percents, integers, measurement, geometry, and basic equations. They also strengthen skills with fractions, decimals, and integers, preparing them for higher-level math.
Literature and Composition
Students read and discuss a mix of historical fiction, classical stories, and nonfiction that connects to their history studies. Books include Black Ships Before Troy, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Bronze Bow. They practice analyzing stories and improve their writing through essays, summaries, personal narratives, opinion papers, and informational pieces, while also expanding their vocabulary and spelling.
Grammar and Latin
In Grammar, students review parts of speech, punctuation, sentence structure, and building complex sentences. They also continue expanding their vocabulary. In Latin, students review verb tenses, nouns, and adjectives from previous years and learn more advanced noun declensions to grow their language skills.
Religion
Students explore God’s plan for their lives. They study His Laws through the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes, learn about the Holy Mass, and reflect on Jesus’ second coming and the choices that guide our eternal destiny.
Science
Sixth graders study Earth Science, learning about our planet and the world around us. Topics include Earth’s structure, surface features, water and the atmosphere, technology, and space science.
